Jane Tari Appointed as Vanuatu’s First Female Public Solicitor

Port Vila, Vanuatu – 01 April 2026: The Office of the Public Solicitor has officially welcomed the appointment of Ms. Jane Tari as the new Public Solicitor of the Republic of Vanuatu, marking a significant milestone for the country’s justice sector.

Ms. Tari’s appointment is historic, as she becomes the fifth Public Solicitor of Vanuatu and the first woman to hold this highest position within the Public Solicitor’s Office, breaking new ground for women in the country’s justice sector.

The Ministry of Justice is pleased to confirm that all previously vacant senior positions within the justice sector have now been successfully filled, marking a significant achievement under its 2026 annual priorities.

The position had remained vacant since the passing of the late Jacob Kausiama on 23 April 2024. During this period, the Office of the Public Solicitor continued its operations without a substantive head until 10 February 2026, when His Excellency Nikenike Vurobaravu, President of the Republic of Vanuatu, formally appointed Ms. Tari to the role.

Originally from Ambae Island, Ms. Tari brings with her extensive legal experience and a strong commitment to public service. She graduated in 2008 from the University of the South Pacific with a Bachelor of Laws and a degree in Management. She joined the Office of the Public Solicitor in 2009 and has steadily progressed through the ranks.

In 2022, Ms. Tari further strengthened her legal expertise by undertaking postgraduate studies in Australia, where she obtained a Master of Laws. Upon her return, she continued serving as Principal Solicitor until her recent appointment.

Ms. Tari is currently on maternity leave for a period of 12 weeks following her appointment. During her absence, His Excellency Nikenike Vurobaravu has appointed Mr. Henzler Vira as Acting Public Solicitor.

Mr. Vira is a graduate of law from the University of the South Pacific and is one of the longest-serving solicitors within the Office of the Public Solicitor. He has served under two former Public Solicitors and brings a wealth of institutional knowledge and experience to the acting role. Mr. Vira will serve as Acting Public Solicitor until 30 May 2026.

Since her appointment, Ms. Tari has demonstrated strong leadership and a clear vision for strengthening the institution. She is committed to improving access to legal services, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring that the office continues to serve the people of Vanuatu with integrity and professionalism.

The Government and the justice sector have expressed confidence in Ms. Tari’s leadership and in Mr. Vira’s capability to effectively guide the office during this interim period, ensuring continuity and stability in the delivery of legal services.
